On 17 June 1858, a fierce battle took place between Rani Lakshmibai's army and the English army at a place called Kota-ki-Serai near Gwalior. Rani Lakshmibai fought bravely in this war and caused heavy damage to the British.
During the war, Rani Lakshmibai was injured and she asked a sadhu to burn her body so that the British would not find her body. Inspired by the heroic actions of Rani Lakshmibai, some local people cremated her.
Three days after the war, the British captured the city of Gwalior. In the British report of this war, Hugh Rose praised the bravery and beauty of Rani Lakshmibai and said that "she is the most dangerous of all Indian leaders."
In 1878, British officer and writer Colonel Mallison in London wrote about Rani Lakshmibai that "No matter how many faults Rani Lakshmibai may have in the eyes of the British, her countrymen will always remember that she was driven to revolt due to bad behavior and she lived and died for her country, we cannot forget her contribution to India."
