Gateway of the Ahmedabad history

“Then & Now” Gateway of the Ahmedabad (built 1480), Sarangpur Darwaja, Panchkuva, Ahmedabad. Photograph circa 1900-1910.

The need for an extension of the walled city of Ahmedabad was felt as the city expanded under the reign of its founder Sultan Ahmed Shah. The second fort was completed in the 1480s by Sultan Mahmud Begada. One of the gates of this fort is the Sarangpur Darwaja.

Sarangpur Gate lies near the Sindhi Market and other cloth markets of Ahmedabad. With doors of iron-plated timber, this is a gateway of three stone arches twenty-six feet high and fifteen broad with a roofed platform that could hold three gu-ns. #History #India #Ahmedabad
