 "Today in History"

An interesting description of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's attack on Shaista Khan exactly 361 years ago:- April 5, 1663 AD. Shaista Khan with his harem and royal army was in the same Lal Mahal of Poona, in which Bal Shivaji spent his childhood. Shivaji Maharaj decided to attack at night.

Shivaji Maharaj took 1000 Maratha Bahadurs with him and took 2 armies of 1000 each under the leadership of Netaji Palkar and Moropant Peshwa. First, Shivaji Maharaj entered Poona city with the Marathas as Barati on the pretext of a fake marriage.

Shivaji Maharaj spent his childhood in Poona, so he was well aware of this place. Celebrations were going on in Shaista Khan's palace and many Mughals had fallen asleep. Shivaji Maharaj entered the palace with 400 Marathas and his 2 bodyguards Babaji Bapuji and Chimnaji Bapuji.

Chimnaji entered the harem with 200 Marathas and Shivaji Maharaj entered Shaista Khan's room. Shivaji Maharaj cut off 4 fingers of Shaista Khan.

Babaji Bapuji was walking with 200 Marathas, eliminated whoever came in front and killed Mughals while they were sleeping by entering the rooms. In this chaos, 8 women of the harem were injured, Shaista Khan's son Abul Fatah was killed, 2 sons were injured, 40 men and 6 maidservants of Shaista Khan were killed. 6 Marathas were active in this battle and 40 were wounded.

In Khazainul Futuh, Khafi Khan has written that "my father was present with Shaista Khan at that time. King Alamgir was angry with this incident and sent Shaista Khan to the governorship of Bengal and sent him to that direction after giving the governorship of the south to Prince Muazzam. "

After the killing of Afzal Khan, Shivaji Maharaj won praises throughout India by dealing with such a plight of a high-ranking general like Aurangzeb's maternal uncle Shaista Khan.
