"For over 150 years, Bijapur flourished as the capital of the Adil Shahi line of rulers presiding over a wealthy and influential kingdom. The sultans and queens sponsored a magnificent, highly individual style of architecture that is reflected in both their religious and courtly buildings, with their patronage extending to literature and the arts. This transformed Bijapur into the preeminent intellectual and artistic centre of the Deccan, rivalling in splendour that of the contemporary Mughal capitals of Northern India.
Today, Bijapur retains much of its original Adil Shahi layout and monuments. A large number of religious, courtly and ceremonial structures still stand today, together with baolis and other hydraulic features that supplied water to the city during the 16th and 17th centuries. In recent years, Bijapur’s historical buildings have become increasingly obscured by modern dwellings, and almost nothing now remains of the luxuriant gardens with which Bijapur was once endowed.
